Investing in the stock market can be overwhelming.

A common question I get is, “How do I get started?”

If I were to forget 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 I knew about investing, here are the top things I’d want to know…

1. In any given year, there’s a 70% chance the stock market will go up. In 3/4 years your money goes up. Bet on the positive.

2. Time in the market matters, not timing the market. Nobody has ever been able to consistently predict what’s going to happen.

3. This time is NEVER different. The media will always give you something to worry about next. Expect it. But don’t fall for it.

4. Diversification is your friend. You can’t argue a well-diversified portfolio of high-quality funds.

5. When things go down, it’s time to buy. The stock market is the only place people panic when there’s a 30% off sale. Instead of selling like the rest of society, you should be buying at a discount.

6. The declines are temporary, but the advances are permanent. The long-term trend line of the stock market is up. Don’t worry about short-term dips.

7. The more you change your plan, the worse your returns will be. Make a plan and stick to it.

Before we keep going, I want to share a quick word from today’s sponsor:

8. Successful investing is logical, failed investing is emotional. Stop reacting emotionally to what’s going on in the world. Act out of logic on the plan you made.

9. The most important part of compounding… is don’t interrupt it. Let your money grow.

10. Dollar-cost averaging is a foolproof way to invest. Systematically investing every month has never done anyone wrong.

11. Low-cost index funds are all you need. No need to overcomplicate it.

12. There’s no such thing as getting started too early. I’ve never met someone who wishes they wouldn’t have started investing so early. There’s zero downside to starting as soon as possible.

13. Scared money doesn’t make money. You can’t keep your money in cash, CDs, and money markets and expect to get rich. You need to take calculated risks.

14. Market corrections are normal. The stock market goes down about 10% every year (at some point during the year) on average. Stop acting surprised.

There you have it!

The top things I wish I knew if I were to forget everything about investing.

Now, let’s get investing!
