Thursday marked the start of 2025, as investors prepare for the possibility of a third straight year of market gains. The S&P 500 closed out 2024 with an impressive 23% increase, capping the strongest two-year run since 1997-1998.

Despite this strength, the usual Santa Claus Rally was absent, and the final four trading days of 2024 saw the worst performance for that stretch since 1952. This downward trend extended into the first trading day of 2025, with all major indexes finishing in the red on Thursday.

Last week, I highlighted how the Santa Claus Rally and the January Barometer can be unreliable market predictors. While I expect a volatile and uneven January, I remain optimistic about the long-term outlook for stocks.

The recent pullback, while challenging, was overdue. The past two years have delivered the highest returns in over two decades, pushing valuations to elevated levels and boosting bullish sentiment. This correction is a healthy reset and provides a buying opportunity for those with a long-term perspective.
