This Week’s Market Recap… 📊

Tariffs take center stage.

This week was dominated by tariff announcements from President Trump over the weekend. He stated that the U.S. will impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada, effective midnight on February 2nd.

For months, economists and investors in the media have warned that tariffs would fuel inflation and be a disastrous policy. I’ve pushed back on this narrative, largely due to other economic factors, a strong dollar and declining oil prices.

Markets initially reacted with fear, leading to a negative Monday, much like last week’s DeepSeek-driven selloff. However, a strong earnings season helped stocks recover. Palantir delivered a massive beat, surging 37% this week alone.

Google and Amazon also reported, but their stocks slipped due to weaker-than-expected guidance. Uber posted strong earnings but was overshadowed by cautious guidance, citing severe weather disruptions in January.

On the economic front, all eyes were on this morning’s Non-Farm Payrolls (Jobs) report. Earlier in the week, ISM Manufacturing came in stronger than expected, while ISM Services missed—but neither had a major market impact amid the tariff and earnings focus.

A key development in recent weeks has been the movement in the U.S. 10-Year Treasury yield. Just three weeks ago, consensus feared a surge past 5% due to inflation concerns. That trade has completely reversed, with the 10-Year now sitting at 4.44%, an 8.4% drop.

We see recent tariff-driven market dips as buying opportunities. The economy remains strong, and we stand by our S&P 500 year-end target of 7,000.

Stay positive, stay invested, and stay optimistic.

Have a great weekend!
